"This exquisite and darkly comedic painting by [Niamh Hughes] highlights a modern issue in Irish culture of cutting ties with the church, and entertaining more bacchanal impulses of the spirit. In fact, the choice of alcohol (spirit) and the floating aspect this limbless figure brings seems to confirm the ghostly, spectral, and unorthodox nature of a new paganism. The forbidding red background oozes with a sense of danger, only exacerbated by the appearance of the scissors and blindfold, but the knowing grin on the subject’s face seems to connote something more. A pleasure, perhaps, in disconnecting the ties which bind the crosses, so that they can rain down, as amputated as the subject is."
